West Roxbury High School (first) is built.
1840
[1836, 1842] Originally the Eliot High School, then Jamaica Plain High School, it is located at 24 Eliot Street. Only boys are allowed to attend. A separate girls high school opens in Village Hall in 1855, and the boys high school relocates there (second) in 1858.* The combined school moves to a new building (third) on Elm Street in 1868,* another building on the same site (fourth) in 1898.* The school is renamed Jamaica Plain High School in July 1923. Students from Roslindale and West Roxbury attend a new Roslindale High School in 1928.* A new West Roxbury High School (fifth) opens in West Roxbury in 1976.* The school is broken up into four smaller learning academies in 2003. Jamaica Plain High School merges with English High School and moves to McBride Street 1989.*
